Why Did You Become a Teacher?

By Richard Averett

People have asked my why I became a career teacher and I have the answer to that question is simple: To make a difference. For 30 years I taught Speech and Theatre at a Community College in Nebraska. Many of my students in the early years were first-generation college students. Many came from rural areas where exposure to the arts was limited. By producing and directing over 200 plays during that time I have been able to introduce students to the thrill of sharing their talent and to be introduced to some of the great literature of the ages. Most of my students did not become professional performers but many continued with community theatre. But, more importantly, they gained a self-confidence in presenting themselves to the public. Many have commented that their experience has led them to greater success in their chosen careers. My speech students have learned how to organize and present their ideas to an audience without fear of failure.

What better reason to have chosen this career???
